That is where he first heard the music of Bob Wills, which inspired him to play the fiddle. His dear friends, Edith and Wayne Unruh, found him fiddling in a pasture when he was 13. They took him in and began working on his singing and taught him countless bluegrass gospel standards. They performed together as a gospel trio until he went off to college.
